Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the massive storm caused extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to rooftop levels and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals who were trapped atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was about to be ripped off by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Typhoon Strength and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed at least 224 people and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing tropical storms stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists have found that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause an average of millions in dollars in losses for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared a state of emergency last week because of the severe damage from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
