Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a joint strike on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by surveillance, was believed to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to stamp out any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, following an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
